New Art Show This Month

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update to let everyone know what has been going on. My latest work, A Peaceful Sonata, will been on view along with, "The calm before the Storm" (Tiger painting), and "Eden" (Angel still life) at the Riverview Gallery in Portsmouth, VA. The opening reception will be held this Friday, November 6th and will be on view until the end of the month. This will be my first showing in this gallery. I hope everyone who is close to this area will be able to attend.
Lately I've been catching up on my illustration work so that has slowed me down a bit with starting any new fine art. With that being said though I should be able to get the new ideas I have for my next painting down on board this coming week.
I hope everyone is doing well. Be back soon with my next work in progress......I think I'm leaning toward pastel on this new one......

A Peaceful Sonata Complete / New Tutorial Published

A Peaceful Sonata is finally finished. I think I started on this back in mid August. Glad to finally have it finished. I used a very limited palette on this painting. Even though I only used seven colors to create this, through color mixing (blending) I was able to create many more colors. I was trying to give this painting a glowing antique feel and enough detail to draw the viewer in. All in all, I'm pretty happy with this one. Now that this one is finished, it's time to go clean up and reorganize my studio. My studio usually takes a hit when I'm working on a painting:) Small price to pay I guess:)
My third colored pencil tutorial is now published. If you would like to view it please click here. Two years has passed since the last tutorial so I thought it was time to write at least one more.
I hope everyone enjoys the new work and the new tutorial. If anyone has any questions or comments please feel free to contact me.
All the Best,
Scott

Violin still life almost complete / New Tutorial

Hi everyone,

I know it has been awhile since the last update on the violin still life. Sorry for that. The good news is that I have a really good excuse! For the last week or so I've been working on a colored pencil tutorial that will involve the Violin Still life. It's been more than two years since I wrote the last tutorial (portrait) so I decided to try my hand at a still life tutorial. Incase your wondering, yes it's free just like the other tutorials:) I should have the violin still life painting and the tutorial completed in the next few days.I hope you like it and thanks for your patience.
All the best,
Scott

Violin Still Life Update 7

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for following this work in progress. I've had a bad cold for the last few days so that has unfortunately slowed my progress down a little. It's getting there slowly but surely though:)  Lately I've been looking around at other galleries to show case my work and happily I think I've found a couple who are willing to hang my work. These galleries are in a more upscale area than the previous galleries I've shown at and the art community in these areas are much more diversified. As things look now I will be participating in a month long show in one of these galleries in November. I'll keep everyone up to date about this as I receive more information.
I've had a couple of subscribers to this blog ask me why I felt the need to paint a still life at this point in my career instead of sticking to my usual wildlife and nature themes. While wildlife and nature are my personal favorite subjects to portray, from time to time I like to stretch out from what I'm use to and broaden my horizons with new subject matter. Like a lot of galleries I've visited lately, I like to try and stay as diversified as possible. This in turn will hopefully put me in other markets that aren't wildlife based. So, while I will of course still be painting wildlife I will also be portraying other subjects that I feel will aid in the well being of those who view my work. One of the fundamental aspects to all of my work is a sense of peace and tranquility. At least I hope it is. If any of these aspects are missing from my work then I feel I haven't done my job as an artist.
I hope everyone is enjoying this work in progress. If you have any questions or comments please feel free.
All the very best to everyone,
Scott

Violin Update 6

Hi Everyone,

Sorry it's taken so long to get this update to you. As you can see I've completed quite a bit since my last update. Notice the color of the violin and how using that color helps the main subject move forward and also helps catch the eye first. I still have a ways to go. I still need to add sheet music to the paper scrolls. I'm still trying to think of a good title for this one.
   Thank for looking,
Scott

Happy Birthday to my son Jaob

Hard to believe it's been four years since Wendy and I brought our son home from the hospital. I know it's a really old saying but they really do grow up fast. I'm really proud of my little boy! Happy Birthday Jacob!
